I am a cultural historian of modern Britain, based at the University of Nottingham, UK. I’m interested in everyday experiences of modernity, with a particular emphasis on the body in public space. Since 2014, I have worked with Boots Archive on a number of projects. In 2016, we co-curated an exhibition, Inspiring Beauty: No7 – Eighty Years of Making-up the Modern Woman, which used the No7 cosmetics range to explore women’s negotiation of social and cultural change. I published some of my research for that exhibition here. I am now engaged, with my colleague Prof. Anna Greenwood, on a four-year AHRC-funded research project: ‘Chemist to the Nation, Pharmacy to the World’: Exploring the Global Dimensions of British Healthcare and Beauty with Boots the Chemists, 1919-1980. We’ll be exploring how British beauty practices relied on global networks of materials, labour, imagery and ideas, as well as how Boots facilitated the maintenance of British beauty practices abroad.
