Avery Brock

Avery Brock is a recent graduate of University College London with an MA in Museum Studies
from the Institute of Archaeology. Avery also holds a Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology and a
Minor in International Studies from Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio.
Avery has worked in accredited museums in the US, such as the Dayton Art Institute, and
various institutions in the UK, such as the Imperial War Museums and Kew Gardens’ Economic
Botany collection. Avery’s academic interest within museums lies in how makeup is
represented, or often under-represented, in museums, particularly from the Second World War
to the present day.

Avery is especially interested in exploring both why makeup is often absent from museum
collections and why it lacks a standardised care practice. Avery is also interested in exploring
whose stories are overlooked due to this gap in the collections. This interest has accumulated
into Avery’s Master’s dissertation, Erased Faces: The Lack of Contemporary Makeup
Representation in London Museums and its Cultural Implications.
